The Red Ensign is simply a red version of the Australian National Flag. Throughout the 20th Century, this flag was used as both a navy flag and a civilian flag and confusion around it’s use continued until the Flags Act 1953 was passed which specified the Blue Ensign as Australia’s National flag and the Red Ensign to be used by registered Merchant ships.
